Fostering Change in San Diego

The last few months have been some of the busiest of my life. I want to give everyone an update as to what is going on. Because, as many of you know there have been a lot of water cooler discussion as to what it is both myself, and my organization will be working on. Right now, I see an incredibly apparent need for reform throughout much of San Diego. But, due to current community outrage, we need to set our sights on El Cajon. Former State Senator Wadie Deddeh, who served as the first Chaldean to hold public office wrote an op-ed detailing this very need.

An Update on Some Work Being Done

I apologize to anyone that has periodically checked my site to see that a new log has not been made in some time. Currently, I am busy on so many different fronts. Last week, in partnership with Care About South Park I took part in a truly amazing grassroots protest against corporate influence in the South Park area. The experience of seeing and talking to so many young and engaged citizens really warmed my heart.

What Corporate Influence Means for South Park

South Park is a community that is home to over 30 of our small business members and thousands of families who have helped to grow the community to what it is today. A few days ago I met with small business owners from the city while wandering around its streets. I could not help but compare what the city has transitioned to in the last 20 years, to what it is today. South Park, at one point was an area better left unnoticed by the greater San Diego area because it was seen by many as an eye sore.

Our Journey

Before I begin with another blog post, I would like to personally thank everyone who has been our journeys means of support throughout this period that has required so much of us. It is your commitment that provides purpose to what it is we are doing. Right now I am in a plane accompanying my Bishop Sarhad Jammo back to San Diego after a week meeting with Congress, White House officials, and UN officials. As many of you may know, I am actively trying to garner support for HR 5430, or the Nineveh Plains Refugee Act which would grant those displaced in the northern region of Iraq a chance for new life in the United States.

The Christian Holocaust in Iraq.

As many of you have been heard on local and nationwide media the onslaught of Iraqi Christians at the hand of ISIL lays in our midst. And, all signs point towards a Christians Holocaust amongst the destabilization of Iraq. For those of you that do not know, I am a member of the Iraqi Christian or "Chaldean" community. My parents immigrated to this great nation to give our family the opportunity to succeed. An opportunity not readily afforded to us in the Middle East. And while my family has started a new life in the United States, I cannot help but think of the life that my parents left behind, and for those that did not have the chance to leave. Which is why the struggle of my Chaldean brothers and sisters in foreign lands remains distant, but never forgotten through my journey in the beautiful country I am proud to call home.

My First Post!

This is my very first post for my blog, and I couldn’t be happier to open myself up to a wider audience. My intentions with this are still somewhat unclear even to myself. I’m hoping to be able to use this as a platform for greater detail regarding any political stances, social views, and just anything personal that is hard to get out in the form of conventional media sources.

Minimum Wage and the Voice of the Public.

As many of you may know the San Diego City Council has voted to push for a minimum wage hike that will see it hit $11.50. I've talked to many members of the media regarding this bump and I think it's time I go into greater detail about where it is I stand on the issue.I have said time and again that I completely support the bump approved by Governor Jerry Brown as I believe that no one working full time should be forced to live in poverty. Such a decision was reached because of input from all sides of the table and I believe a deal was struck for the better of all California.
